If you are looking to give your garden a makeover but you are worried about how much money you will be spending then don’t worry as there are many ways in which you can get the job done without spending too much. I moved to Alberta, Canada from the USA two years ago and I was just about to borrow some money from a lender for a garden renovation, something which I really wasn’t sure if I could afford. I had all but signed all of the fraud protection and loan agreement paperwork when I had a chance conversation with my neighbor Travis Cadman, a professional gardener. Travis spoke to me at length about budget options for my garden and so I decided not to get the loan, roll up my sleeves and get creative. If you want to give your garden a budget makeover, here is how to get it done.
Pallet Decking
I always wanted to have a nice decked area in the garden but when I priced up some professionally installed decking I realized that it was just going tome too expensive. Travis however had a great idea which was to use some pallets from a local warehouse, and stack them together like decking. I wasn’t sure how it would look at first but my goodness it looks absolutely amazing. We got the pallets for free, even if you can’t then you can buy them very cheaply, and then we sanded them, treated them and painted them before laying them on a flattened area of the garden. To be completely honest you would have no idea that these were pallets if I didn’t tell you and they are a great option if you are looking for cheap decking.
Old and Gold
For a really cool and quirky look to your garden you should try and find some old metal pieces which add a sense of style and art. We found an old bicycle and 2 old sewing machines which look really weird but very cool. These old pieces can be found in junk yards or thrift shops and the old metal looks really cool along side fresh plants, there is a certain juxtaposition there which I really love.
Clean Up
This may sound incredibly simple but one of the first things which you should do in the garden is give it a really good clean up and get the weeds out. This will give your garden a completely new look and it will give you a great platform from which to get started.
Planting Grass
If you want a grassy area in your garden then avoid buying turf which you can roll out, whilst this does give you an instant grassy area, the cost is almost treble what you will pay compared with if you buy some grass seed and plant it in your area. It may take a little more time to look good, but in the long run it will save you lots of money.
