His father had expired when he was very young. After his father’s death, his mother married Publius Cornelius Lentulus Sura, who was accused of having played a significant role in the Conspiracy of Catiline and later executed by Cicero in 63 BC. This event is one of the most important landmarks in the history of Mark Antony as it is considered to be responsible for the development of enmity between Antony and Cicero in the later years.
Mark Antony had a rich political and military career. The history of Mark Antony provides enough evidence to prove that he was a proficient warrior, admired by the Roman army. He was well known for his inspiring tribute at the funeral of Julius Caesar and his sincere efforts to hunt down Caesar's assassins, Brutus and Cassius. He entered into a five-year pact of joint autocracy, called the Triumvirate, with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Caesar’s adopted nephew and heir Octavian. When he took over the eastern province, he fell in love and later married Queen Cleopatra of Egypt.
He was defeated by Octavian (Emperor Augustus) in the last civil war that led to the final collapse of the Roman Republic. He died on 1 August 30 BC, soon after his defeat in the Battle of Actium with Octavian. He died as a brave soldier and a successful statesman. He lost the war because of the sudden, unexpected departure of Cleopatra and the reluctance of his troops to fight the fellow Romans. The main reasons that led to Antony’s downfall was his persistent riotous behavior, carousing, ignorance towards Rome’s best interests, enmity with Cicero, and his disregard to his righteous wife Octavia, sister of Octavian/Emperor Augustus.
