History of Superman
| Superman who? If that is your response, then you are probably not from Planet Earth! This comic book superhero is not only American icon; he is an icon worldwide. Published by DC Comics and created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1932, Superman made his first appearance in Action Comics #1, in June 1938. |
There was no stopping this superhero from then on. Be it radio series, TV shows, movies, video games or comic strips in newspaper, Superman was everywhere and the public could not have enough of him.
Even his costume, the blue, red and yellow outfit with a cape and an ‘S’ shield, has reached an iconic status over the years. Superman’s origins take us to planet Krypton, where he was born as Kal-El. He was sent to Earth by his father, a scientist named Jor-El, just before Krypton was destroyed. A farmer and his wife in Kansas found the infant and raised him as their own son. They named him Clark Kent. The kid started showing superhuman talents, which he vowed to use for making the world a better place.
Also called 'The Man of Steel', 'The Man of Tomorrow' and 'The Last Son of Krypton', Superman lives in the real world as a soft-spoken reporter for Daily Planet, a Metropolis newspaper. His coworker and love interest is Lois Lane, whom he later gets married to.
Superman was immortalized on celluloid by actor Christopher Reeve, who played the role in Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie (1978), as well as in the sequel Superman II (1981). Then came two other sequels, namely Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and both turned out to be box office duds. Then 2006 saw the release of Superman Returns, which did not exactly send the cash registers ringing in the US, but was a huge hit worldwide.
