History of Basketball

James Naismith is recognized with inventing basketball. This happened in December 1891. Naismith was a physician, clergyman and an educator from Canada. At that point, he was working at the YMCA Training School located in Springfield, Massachusetts.

When Dr. Luther H. Gulick has asked him to organize an energetic recreation that was ideal as an indoor winter game, Naismith came up with the idea of basketball. He formulated a game that involved key fundamentals of American football, hockey and soccer.
In the beginning the game was played using a soccer ball, and there were not hoops. Instead, peach baskets made from wood were used as hoops. These baskets were attached to the walls. The earliest teams were of nine players each, but by 1897-1898, team sizes came down to five each. The game gained popularity across the nation very fast, and then went on to be a hit in Canada and other countries in the world. Very soon, both men and women in many countries were playing basketball.
Colleges in the US started the game official between 1893 and 1895. The very first college games were played at the Madison Square Garden of New York City in 1934. By the 1950s, basketball was a major sport in American colleges, which led to many students showing interest in a career devoted to pro basketball.
The first professional league known as the National Basketball League was established in 1898, and only lasted for five years. In 1949, the NBL, which was established in 1937 and the Basketball Association of America (1946) were merged to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).
