History of Ice Cream Flavors

What we so enjoy having during summer time -- ice cream actually originated from the Romans. Emperor Nero ordered ice from the mountains to be mixed with fruits and served. The Chinese discovered the art of combining milk and ice to make icy concoctions. It was from China that the ice cream recipe came to Europe.

In the US, ice cream was considered a delicacy and served to important guests at the White House. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were known to serve ice cream to important visiting dignitaries. In another incident, Governor Bladen of Maryland served ice cream to his guests in 1700, and this event was recorded. Ice cream production on a larger scale took place once temperature controls were developed.
The use of salt to control ice ream temperature was seen as a major breakthrough in the making of ice cream. Another breakthrough is the development of the wooden bucket freezer as it enhanced ice cream manufacturing methodology. It was in 1776 that the fist ice cream parlor opened in the US.
At that time, ice cream was referred to as iced cream as in iced tea. Later, this was abbreviated to ice cream. Many ice cream recipes were invented by Augustus Jackson in 1832 and these were quite popular. He was a confectioner in Philadelphia, and he distributed his ice cream packages in tin cans to the parlors there. The first large-scale production of ice cream came about in 1851. Jacob Fussell established the first ice cream plant.
Today, every country has its own popular ice cream brands and the recipes for making ice cream are varied and delicious. It is surprising to note that the origins of this popular dessert item lies in 4th century BC.
