History of Watermelon

        Many studies and researches have tried to find the time period in history, when watermelons were cultivated. Some of the chronological aspects to appreciate the history of watermelon are as follows:

        2000 BC - Period when watermelons were first cultivated in ancient Egypt and ancient India.

        Around the thirteen century, history reveals that watermelons were first brought into Europe.

        1500 - Watermelons were brought into North America. There is some dispute over who introduced the fruit. According to some, French explorers brought the watermelon to America, while others claim that the slaves first cultivated the fruit.

        1615 - Watermelons were commonly used in practice, and the word watermelon was included in the English dictionary.

        1629 - Introduced to Massachusetts, as per the statement from John Egerton, who is a well-known food historian.

        There is an interesting anecdote about the watermelon in Vietnam. According to stories, the fruit was first found by Prince Mai An Tiem. Stories say that when the prince was exiled, a bird from western direction threw seeds of a fruit. The Prince cultivated them and survived by eating the fruit. Hence, the fruit got its name.

        According to Jerry Parsons, a famous horticulturist from Texas, watermelons were spread and made famous all over the world by the colonists from Europe and the slaves from Africa.
