History of Mars Chocolate
| Mars is one of the most popular chocolate bars in the world. It is made from a mix of milk chocolate, almonds, caramel and nougat. Mars chocolate is made by Mars, Inc, which is a global company that also produces other popular chocolates such as Milky Way, M&M, Snickers and Maltesers. |
This chocolate was first produced in 1932, and since then, its popularity has been increasing with consumers all over the world. The original recipe is still used to make the Mars chocolate, but the proportions of the ingredients have changed over all these years.
Mars chocolate was the invention of Forrest Mars. It was based on the Milky Way bar chocolate, which was quite famous in the United States. When Mars first came out, it was quite a surprise. The bar was basically a milk chocolate covered in nougat and caramel.
Manufacture of Mars chocolate began first in a rented factory in Slough in 1932. Forrest Mars used around $50,000 to set up the factory and took the rights of the Milk Way recipe from his father to begin operations in Slough, England. The factory staff consisted of 12 people and this chocolate combination was created for the very first time in the UK.
Mar bar is still manufactured in the same town in the United Kingdom. However, in 2002, there was a slight transformation in the chocolate -- there was a lightness introduced in the consistency of the milk chocolate content and nougat. However, this new mix did not affect the popularity of Mars chocolate. Also, the size of Mars chocolate was reduced due to rising costs from 62.5g to 58g.
