History of Fortune Magazine

If you want the latest news on business, Fortune is the magazine you should check out. This global business magazine gives you the latest development in the field of business, and its main competitor is Forbes magazine. There is also an online version of the magazine.

Fortune magazine was a monthly issue from the time of its initialization till 2000, when it became a bi-weekly issue. The most sought after information in the magazine is its ‘best of’ list, such as the list of America's Most Admired Companies, Fortune 500 companies, Fortune 100 companies and Fortune 1000 companies.

This magazine was initiated in 1930. It was a couple of months into the great Depression, when Henry Booth decided that the business community needed was a vibrant magazine that gave out the latest information on what was happening in the business community.

The first printed edition of the Fortune Magazine cost only $1. The paper used to print the magazine was a heavy kind, and the magazine’s cover was covered in art printed through a special printing process, giving it an attractive appearance. Right from the start Fortune Magazine was recognized for its broad social coverage and crisp detail to business events.

In 1955, it began its summer issue called ‘Fortune 500’, which is its most significant issue every year. This issue has a list of companies that shows the status of the US economy and the strength of US-based businesses. Economists use this list to predict the growth ad future of specific companies and industries. Till now, about 2000 companies have been featured in this list.
