History of the Chinese Astrology
| Chinese Astrology dates back to a couple of thousand years. In the course of its popularity among people, different systems of astrological predications have cropped up. In short, there are two main types of astrological research. One of the systems relies only on the birth details. Another system takes into account the position of the different planets and stars during the birth of the individual in addition to the birth data. |
The Chinese and western astrology are similar in some ways. They are based on 12 signs. However, there are some differences in the calendar that is followed. The Chinese use lunar calendar to calculate the moon cycles, hence the New Year falls on different dates. Some of the systems follow the solar calendar though.
All Chinese astrology systems are based on the theory of five basic elements -- Water, Wood, Metal, Earth and Fire.
The cycle is explained as follows. While Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth. Earth is the source of Metals which produce Water. Water is important for producing Wood and the cycle continues. Based on the positioning of these elements and the balance of each of them in the astrological chart, the astrologer determines the basic traits and characteristics of a person and the course of life.
The 12 primary symbols in Chinese astrology are as follows - Tiger, Snake, Rat, Rooster, Pig, Dog Ox, Sheep, Rabbit, Monkey, Dragon and Horse. The reasons for particularly choosing these 12 animals are still not clear. But there are many interesting stories that explain how the order of animals has been determined.
