History of Strawberries

Strawberries are strewn among its leaves and were initially called strewn berries. Later, people started calling these berries by its current name. Another legend says that the farmers used straw and made mulch over the plant and that is where the name originated.

The strawberries that are available today belong to the family of Fragaria which denotes the flesh in the fruits. Strawberries can make your skin glow, looks radiant without any scars. That is the reason Madam Tallien, who became popular during the years of French revolution used to bath using this fruit. Another established writer named Fontenelle ate strawberries daily and lived a long healthy life. However, it is an irony that till the middle years of 19th century, people in Argentina considered the fruit to be poisonous.
Strawberries have been found more than 2200 years ago. Initially found in the northern European regions, strawberries were later found in the US, Russia and Chile. Records reveal that wild strawberries were present in Italy as early as 234 BC. Romans used this fruit for medicinal purposes.
In 1588, when Europeans landed on the Virginia shores they found this fruit. The cultivation of this fruit started in 1643 when some American Indians started growing the plant. In 1860, strawberries were grown in a large scale in many countries.
In the year 1900, strawberry cultivation was started in California. Now about 80 percent of the strawberry consumption is provided by this place. About 25,000 acres of land has been allotted only for cultivating this crop.
