Dark Adaptation Of The Eye

Dark adaptation of the eye means the ability of the eyes to be able to gain vision when there is a sudden change from light to dark. When you move from a brighter area to a dark room, you can notice a phenomenal change in vision and this is categorized by dark adaptation of the eye.

As per ocular physiology, dark adaptation is the ability of the eye to adjust to various colors, and darkness and light. The human eye can distinguish between various shades of colors from the darkest to the lightest. The human has nine different levels of orders of magnitude. As a basic experiment when you stay out in bright sunlight for a long time and get inside a dark room, you are almost blinded, and your eye cannot see anything. The sense of vision comes back to you slowly. They say it takes 20 to 30 minutes for the eye to get completely adapted to darkness. The eyes are capable of seeing in darkness. However, it cannot happen suddenly.

Scientifically, rods and cones are used by the eye for dark adaptation. The eye goes through several changes while undergoing dark adaptation. Similarly, when you come out from a very dark area to bright light, then you tend to shut off your eyes immediately. However, vision does come back pretty soon.

Dark adaptation takes longer because the color is deeper and thicker. The eyes need to be much more sensitive to have the ability to see in the dark. To reach the maximum sensitivity level it takes at least half hour for the eyes.
