Computers were introduced in the year 1940. It was invented and created basically for military purposes, which were utilized by the army for calculating the artillery firing tables for the Ballistics Research Lab of the U. S. Army, and for integrated calculations precisely in areas pertaining to the applications of the hydrogen bomb. The oldest recorded computer was invented by Konrade Zuse in 1936.
The computer that was first invented and introduced to the world occupied nearly the entire room. In short they occupied the space that could accommodate nearly hundred present day computers. They were so huge and at the same time consumed high amount of power. Most of you would remember that the first computer was roughly of size equal to a small house, and had a vacuum tube. The computer had no chance of fitting on a desk because of its size and you needed to accommodate another room for it. It looked as if it came out from an old Frankenstein film along with wires hanging from one end to the other. Its dimensions were about 8 feet by 3 feet by 100 feet. It weighed about 27 tons, and took up 1800 square feet of space. Also called the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, (ENIAC), it comprised of 280 tubes, 31 thyratrons and more than 5,000 feet of wires. However, it is surprising and fascinating to view the recent changes and innovations in size in contrast to its capability.
