Renaissance Art

The word Renaissance means rebirth in French. It was a cultural movement that started around 14th century through the 16th century. It began in Florence, Italy in the late Middle Ages, and later on it spread to the remaining parts of Europe.

It is believed that during that time the art patrons were heavily relied on by painters as they were the ones who commissioned the work that the painters drew, and thus were able to earn a livelihood. Therefore, around the 14th century, art patrons wanted artists to paint art that depicted joy and happiness rather than the somber and dull paintings that were prevalent until then. This prompted an artist named Giotto from Florence to start painting in the new style which checking an object from near as well as far and then painting it in such a manner that the painting looked as if it had depth in it.

However, it is believed the Giotto actually lived hundred years before the Renaissance art era started, but his artwork nonetheless showed great deal of emotion. The art that would be created in Renaissance actually was built on the style of Giotto.

However, it was not until an architect named Filippo Brunelleschi and later the writings of Leon Battista Alberti that the linear perspective of Renaissance actually became known as an artistic technique. In addition to the linear perspective, other artists in the Renaissance period also developed other techniques of painting. With this, there was a resurgence in artists wanting to paint trying to get the beauty of nature on the canvas. Works of Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael are the masters of this era. Other artists like Sandro Botticelli, Donatello and Titan were not far behind.

At the same time when Renaissance was occurring in Italy, a new and bright artistic culture was developing in The Netherlands due to the artwork of artists like Hungo van der Goes and Jan van Eyck. Both have been credited with introducing oil painting and canvas. Later on, it was the artwork of Pieter Brueghel the Elder who influenced other artists to show everyday life in paintings.
