When Did World War 1 Begin ?

World War I began in 1914 when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo in the Balkans by Gavrilo Princip. He was the only successor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Germany was always backing Austria and now they even went ahead with their promise of backing them up in case of war. Austria was now over confident because of Germany and they directly went to war with Serbia. They bombed Belgrade on July 29, 1914. On July 28, 1914, Russia started moving its army and Germany intervened asking them to stop it. However, Russia did not want to listen and they declared a war against Germany. This prompted German allies, Austria and Hungary, to declare war against Russia.

Belgium was neutral and Germany violated it. So, Britain used this opportunity to attack France and declared war. Thereafter, one country after the other started fighting each other when it was totally unnecessary. Entire Europe was gripped under a conflict during the World War I. However, what started the war was a personal enmity between two countries which was overblown and the entire incident got out of hand.

The problem was most countries formed new militaries and they did not know how to control them. Everyone wanted to see how strong others were and they also wanted to show how strong they were. The friendships between countries and the alliances that were formed were also new and people did not know where to draw a line. However, the exact events are till unclear even today but the instigator was the assassination of the Archduke of Austria.
