The war fought in Asia, Africa and Europe, and saw the emergence of new firepower, which changed the way the war was fought. |
Some of the major First World War battlefields are as follows:
Battle of Cer and Battle of Kolubara: The Serbian army defeated the Austro-Hungarian army at the Battle of Cer, which took place from 16th August 1914 until 19th August 1914. This prompted the Austro-Hungarian army to retreat from Serbia. However, in December 1914, the Austro-Hungarian army launched a new attack on the Serbians, and this was the Battle of Kolubara. The battle started on 3rd December 1914 and continued till 9th December 1914. This time round the Serbians could not withstand the attack, which also included the German army.
Battle of Tannenberg: This battle was fought between the Russians and Germans after both nations got involved due to their alliances. It took place from 26th August 1914 to 30th August 1915. However, Russians, who were under the command of Alexander Samsonov, were defeated. The Russian Second Army was completely decimated and Samsonov ended up committing suicide. Thereafter, the Germans had to contend with the Russian First Army under the command of Paul von Rennenkampf. The Germans then had to retreat.
First Battle of the Marne: This Germans invaded Belgium and Luxembourg, and were heading towards Paris by the end of August in the year 1914. This caused the French army and the British Expeditionary Force to retreat to Marne River. However, the over ambitious Germans tried to catch the French troops and this led to the First Battle of the Marne from 5th September 1914 until 12th September 1914, and was won by the Allied forces. This battle caused the Germans to let go of the Schlieffen Plan.
There were many other battles fought between the Allied forces and Central powers. Some of the other important battles during the First World War include the Battle of Gallipoli, where the French and British tried to capture Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire; the Battle of Verdun, which was the longest battle in the war due to the number of lives lost; Battle of the Somme, which was in response to the Battle of Verdun and fought between the British Expeditionary Force and the German army; the Battle of Passchendaele, also called the Third Battle of Ypres; and the Second Battle of the Marne, which saw the German army being pushed behind the Hindenburg Line and prompted them to ask for armistice.
