Alliances In World War One
The first alliance in World War One was the Triple Alliance that took place between Germany, Italy and the Austro-Hungary Empire. Then there was an alliance between the French and the Russians, but this did not last for long. The alliance between France and Russia had economical reasons behind it. However, the Russians got angry with the Germans after the Congress of Berlin and this led to the alliance breaking. |
In the year 1887, Germany prohibited the sale of Russian bonds in its stock exchange. This resulted in the weakening of Russian economy, and the country started looking for financial help. This led Russia to form an alliance with France, in return for financial aid to help its weakening economy. Furthermore, once the Triple Alliance was formed, it was understood that the French and Russians would have to work together, as the Triple Alliance had an agreement that they could go to war with either France or Russia if one of the members of the Alliance was attacked by these countries.
During this time, Britain did not want to get involved in any kind of alliance. But, the nation was a little worried about the naval power the Germany was building. The British felt that this posed a threat to the security of the British Empire. This led to a naval race between the British and Germans. At the same time, it also made Britain realize that she needed to form some kind of alliance to protect herself from Germany. This led to an alliance being formed between England and France.
Then, in the year 1907, England formed an alliance with Russia. This aided in settling border disputes with regard to Persia, Afghanistan and Tibet between the 2 nations.
