Punic Wars In Rome

The Punic Wars of Rome determines the three wars of Rome and Carthage that spread over a span of over three centuries. It lasted from 264 until 146 BC. They are called the Punic Wars, as the Carthaginians were called Punicus in Latin.

The first war was fought in Sicily. It was a fight between the East and the West of Greece. The island that was in between was the subject of dispute. The east occupied by Greek colonies and the west by the Carthaginian settlements. Rome became involved because Messina which was a Greek Colony, sought help from Rome. Messina is the island that was in question. The habitants of Messina were not sure if they should help their neighbors, the Carthaginians or should they side the Greek warriors in Syracuse. Messina was in complete disarray. The question soon escalated into a war between Rome and Carthage.

The Romans ended up occupying Messina. However Carthaginians had stricter conditions back home and they call back their troops home and incarcerate them for incompetence. Around 262 BC, the Roman armies prolonged their war by advancing their armies to Sicily. The coastal regions were occupied mainly by the Carthaginians and the Romans wanted to claim territory even there. After that, the senate in Rome decided that they are going to build a fleet. The Romans were good at learning, and so they learned how to make better ships from the Carthaginians. They had better ships and during one of the Romans initial attacks, one of the ships was captured. The rest were imitated. When the naval forces were fighting wars, size did matter on the ocean. Ships strike against each other in war. After this sip was discovered the senate ordered 20 ships to be delivered within a time span of 2 months.

At that time Romans did not have the hand skills of fighting men on an ocean. However the Romans did meet the expectations. They trained more than 30,000 men for warfare. Romans, being as intelligent, made various devices to help win the war. The Romans invested their faith on these devices. The Carthaginians were shocked and were delivered with defeat when they met with the Romans, troops. The Romans displayed increased confidence, due to their increased fleet. The Carthaginians tried inflecting their elephants and swordsmen but all was in vain.

After Rome seized almost all the islands of the west, the most obvious area left was Carthaginians. It was obviously conquered in time.
