Political History South America
The colonies of Spain in South America got their independence in the first half of the 19th century. The wars were popular as the Spanish American Wars of Independence. Oliver was one of the main independence leaders who fought for the Spanish people's freedom. The political history of South America is intertwined with all the nations playing an important part. |
Some of the wars that were fought in South America are the War of the Triple Alliance, the War of the Pacific and the Spanish Independence War. There was a lot of political struggle in the continent for a long time. In the Portuguese colonies, there was a struggle of different kind. However, it ended in the form of independence in 1822. Then formally the first emperor of Brazil was crowned. It was, however, a peace treaty between Brazil and Portugal back then.
Despite these wars and political struggles, several parts of South America did not gain their independence until the latter part of the 20th century. Like, Panama which was under the rule of Columbia, Guyana that was ruled by United Kingdom, Suriname by the Dutch, and Trinidad and Tobago by the British.
In the 20th century, even South America like the rest of the world became a zone of cold war. In 1960, the government of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil were overthrown, and were placed under the military dictatorship supported by the United States. They also used the countries to detain political prisoners. There were several revolutionary wars fought by the people to be liberated and then the continent went through its own neoliberal policies.
