Timeline of Spain's History:

  • 573AD: Spain was conquered by the Visigoths.
  • 711: Invasion by the Muslim invaders from N. Africa displaced the Goths from the nation.
  • 1094: Moors were finally defeated by the Castilian Christian, named El Cid, a Castilian Christian, who later triumphed over Valencia.
  • 1100s: Portugal achieved independence.
  • 1200s: The Muslim-occupied territory was transformed to the small Kingdom of Granada, while the predominant Christian territory encompassed the three major kingdoms of Castile, Navarre, and Aragon.
  • 1469: The Aragon Prince Ferdinand was married to the Castile Princess Isabella.
  • 1474: Isabella was crowned to be Castile’s Queen
  • 1479: Ferdinand was crowned as King of Aragon
  • 1480: Establishment of Spanish Inquisition
  • 1492: On his voyage to America, Christopher Columbus defeated the Granada Muslims.
  • 1494: The New World lands were then claimed by Portugal and Spain
  • 1513: Central America was crossed by Vasco Balboa
  • 1516: Charles I was proclaimed King of Spain and expanded the great Spanish Empire to encompass Netherlands, Luxemburg, and Belgium.
  • 1519: Charles I was declared as Charles V- the Holy Emperor of Rome
  • 1521: Mexican Aztecs was conquered by Hernando.
  • 1533: The Inca Empire of S. America was taken over by Francisco Pizarro of Spain.
  • 1588: The famous Spanish Armada was launched by Philip, who was later defeated at the hands of the English.
  • 1714: The Spanish Succession War came to an end after Spain lost its entire European empire.
  • 1763: Florida was lost by Spain after it was defeated by the UK.
  • 1808: Napoleon-led French forces conquered Spain.
  • 1814: Spain regained its control over the lost empire.
  • 17 July 1821: Spain surrendered Florida to the US.
  • 1898: The Spanish forces saw defeat in the historic Spanish-American War. Cuba was declared independent, while Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines were ceded to US.
  • 1914 - 1918: Spain chose to remain neutral during First World War
  • April, 1931: The first republican government of Spain was established
  • 1936: Civil war by rebel forces led by Francisco Franco was ensued.
