History Of Olympia Greece

This game originally began as a small festival which emerged in the 11th century as just a mere dedication to Lord Zeus. Mycenaeans use to worship Goddess Rhea who apparently happened to be Cronus’s sister. The story goes that Cronus was dethroned since he had favored Rhea’s sons.

The day when Zeus was born, his father, Cronus, was given a stone by his sister. He on the contrary ate that stone and rescued Zeus who finally emerged as the famous God and the inventor of Olympic Games. The very first Olympic Games took place in the year 776 B.C.

Initially, it invited only Greek men, but as years passed, even Romans were allowed to be a part of this elaborate function.

Women, Slaves were abandoned from even viewing the game and if they ever caught someone they would be thrown from a great height. The major events in the history of Olympics were the games that were played. The events had wrestling, horse racing, boxing, and Javelin, Hurdles, long jump race and other foot races. The event was just not limited to athletics but invited writers, painters, history readers, business leaders etc. However, the temples were most of the events use to take place were destroyed by Theodosius II in 426, followed by banning the games.

Tourists frequent Greece mainly during the period when Olympic Games begin.

The town of Olympia is, hence, much more famous than any other city in the world. The stadium was big enough to accommodate nearly 20,000 people. The Olympic Flame was lit and was used by the runners to places where the games were held. We would strongly recommend you to visit this beautiful country and the cities to get a feeling of the olden period. It was said that the winners of these games were awarded a palm leaf by none other than Paeonios. Although, the temples were destroyed but the temple where most of the games began is still in a shape.
