Greece Government History
Indo Europeans were known to enter Greece somewhere back in 2000 B.C. They began setting new civilizations followed by Dorians who again took control of Greece. This was during the Dark Age period also known as Homeric period. Greece soon began to emerge in 750 B.C with its involvement in different fields like politics, art, literature and philosophy. It had already reached the peak position during the fifth century, but due to the Peloponnesian War which took place during 404 B.C and fell under the regime of Philip II and Alexander of Macedonia. |
Greece soon came under the rule of Roman Empire until Constantinople was captured in 1204.Later Turks joined in as the new ruler till 1820 and eventually Greece became independent on 1821. Prince Otto of Bavaria was the very first king of the independent nation in 1832. Later during the rule of George I in 1863, Greece managed to capture most of the territories that were originally under them. This was the period when parliamentary democracy was followed.
However, the nation went through extreme conditions which forced the Greeks to migrate to the U.S in the early twentieth century. Due to its defeat at World War I, Greece managed to be replaced by a republican government in 1923.
Greece is definitely a member of the NATO and also a charter member of the much talked United Nations. The Greek monarchy came to an end in 1974. Since 1981, Greece has managed to be governed by civilian governments and has also achieved great results both economically and politically. Greece has often been accused of being too lenient to terrorism and the Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis swore to work on that issue. He faced lot of flak as well as criticism when Athens Olympics was under way. The violence that took place on 6 December 2008 was the worst Greece had ever faced.
