Belgium And History  

You would be surprised to note that the size of Belgium is equal to the total size of Maryland. It is situated in the western part of Europe near the Strait of Dover. The primary and most important lifeline of Belgium are the two rivers namely Schelde and Meuse. When it comes to the political scenario, Belgium is governed by a Constitutional Monarch and the policies related to society are taken by the Central Government.

Belgium was named after Belgae, an ancient Gaul who was a part of Belgica, a roman province which was later attacked by Julius Caesar during 57 BC. However, in the fifth century the Franks took over Belgium. Later, it went to Charlemagne and Lotharingia in the eight and ninth century respectively. Between 800 to 1000, the Vikings constantly attacked the low countries that demanded defensive measures especially in Flanders that flanked the North Sea, which led to the emergence of local lords and overlords and the monks put up big abbeys and opened up the fertile land by reclaiming it from the sea, draining the swamps, cleaning up the waste lands and cutting down the forests, which coupled with the warm climate provided enough food and allowed the population to grow.

Subsequently, the international merchants were instrumental in forming the first stock exchange in the world in Bruges that encouraged many traders to make money in the free Flanders and thus, Free Enterprise Capitalism came up in Flanders.More...

Belgium has been known for its beer since middle ages and is still famous. It is a fact that nearly 125 breweries are established in Belgium which has the capability to produce 500 varieties of Belgium beer. Initially beer used to be brewed at monasteries in the good old middle ages. So now you would know that Belgium is the one country where you can drink different types of beer at any given time. Now just pay attention to something really important. The beer might definitely lift your mood but maybe the alcohol content would not since it is much higher than the beers brewed in other parts of Europe.
