You would be surprised to note that the size of Belgium is equal to the total size of Maryland. It is situated in the western part of Europe near the Strait of Dover. The primary and most important lifeline of Belgium are the two rivers namely Schelde and Meuse. When it comes to the political scenario, Belgium is governed by a Constitutional Monarch and the policies related to society are taken by the Central Government. |
Belgium was named after Belgae, an ancient Gaul who was a part of Belgica, a roman province which was later attacked by Julius Caesar during 57 BC. However, in the fifth century the Franks took over Belgium. Later, it went to Charlemagne and Lotharingia in the eight and ninth century respectively. Eventually most of the Low Countries namely Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Belgium came under the reign of Charles V.
Further, these territories were under his son, Philippe II. Slowly, Netherlands gained independence and with the onset of French revolution, Belgium came under the rule of France. Belgium after great struggle managed to gain independence in 1830.Germany invaded Belgium during the First World War, and places such as Moresnet, Malmedy and Eupen came under Belgium. The country was ruled by Leopold III in 1934 and later the Nazis imprisoned Leopold during the Second World War. Later in 1990 Belgium underwent a. number of problems and scandals. The year 2000 saw the Liberal party leader Guy Verhofstadt becoming the prime minister till 2003.His party ensured policies that rules that were accepted by most citizens.
Legalization of gay marriages, approval of euthanasia, and ban on Marijuana brought new hopes and expanded their rights. In the year 2008 Yves Leterme was elected to be the new prime minister but soon resigned within nine months and a new cabinet was formed .His government collapsed easily in 2010 due to a constant conflicts arising between French speakers as well as Flemish .Early June 2010, the Flemish Alliance won all the seats and heads the parliament.
