Immigration History Of Australia
Immigration to Australia perhaps began fifty thousand years ago. Human bones that dated more than forty thousand years ago were found in Lake Mungo region and so one can tell that the early nomads migrated to the land as early as this period. These people were the ancestors of the aborigines. However, in the 16th century the area started experiencing other kind of people like European travelers and settlers. |
However, the Europeans started settling in the region only in 1788 and they established the British Crown colony and New South Wales. These were the first formal people to migrate to Australia.
Australia did not have any people originating from there. Whoever had to come would have come through sea as there is no other way to get there. Fifty thousand years ago the sea levels were much lower and the sea could have extended much further than what it is today. Australia and New Guinea were joined and formed a single landmass. The first batch of people who came here could have traveled shorter distances in the Sunda Islands and finally reached Sahul. Archeological excavations prove that the first settlements in Australia could have been in Tasmania and Swan River area.
After the British occupied New South Wales and Sydney area migration, of non whites was completely stopped. They only preferred a certain class of people to come to Australia as settlers. However, when Australia formed its own government and rules, this white only immigration rule was lifted. They are still selective about who can come in to the country.
