History Of Sports Of Australia  

Today, Australia is a leading country in several types of sports and is quite widespread. They have had several achievements in different games in the Olympics, and Common Wealth Games. They are good at water sports and also team based sports like football and Cricket. Australians also love watching and playing sports.

Sports were introduced to the island only by the British. That is why cricket is played very enthusiastically in the country. It is one of the favorite sports for Australians.

The government started taking an active interest in sports through funding and encouragement only in the late 20th century. The Australian Sports Commission was formed, and they took care of all the sporting events and the country’s participation in various international games. The Australian Institute of Sports was also created to encourage sports of various types along the country. Some of the main sports played today are rugby, cricket, hockey, football and tennis. Sports are being played all over the country in Australia. Previously it was only where the British occupied. They made playgrounds and built stadiums so that people could watch them play. Cricket was the main game and it was reserved only for the whites. Even today most people who play cricket are the Whites, but the aborigines and the indigenous population are also allowed access.

The national sport of Australia is cricket. It has been played in the continent for more than two centuries now. The rules of the game are very similar to the rules of the game played in England. Today, Australia competes with various other countries in the game and is also one of the top performing countries in the game.
