Zambia History  

The land of Zambia in Africa is known to have been inhabited by human beings around one to two million years ago. In the year 1889, Cecil Rhodes obtained important leads on prevalence of beneficiary mines from King Lewanika of the Barotse. Soon the region was inhabited by many settlers and Rhodes came to be recognized as the Empire’s builder. The land fell under the authority of the British in 1924.

Between the years 1953 and 1964, Northern Rhodesia was merged with Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Finally, Northern Rhodesia came to be known as the independent nation of Zambia on October 24, 1964 with Kenneth Kaunda elected as the president. The economy of the country flourished due to copper exports. However, the economic condition of the republic fell into jeopardy in 1965 after the independence of Rhodesia from the British. Zambia was denied of trade route via Rhodesia, which proved to be a tremendous set back. History Of Social Welfare In Zambia

A country with butterfly shaped periphery, Zambia is spread over an area of approximately 290,585 square miles. Owing to the rate of copper, the country’s economy flourished soon after independence. However, the 1970s saw deterioration in copper prices leading to a financial set up in the country that now sought foreign assistance for development. Presently, there are several NGOs functioning in the country such as World Vision, Habitat for Humanity and the International Red Cross.

The population statistics of the year 2000 highlight the occupancy of Zambia to be about 9.87 million. The tribes inhabiting the area share a harmonious bond with each other. There exists a sharp demarcation between the poor and the rich in the social set. Apart from financial pressures, the society faces certain other issues as well. One of the most significant problems faced by the country is AIDS. Zambia has high incidence of the fatal disease with restricted medical assistance to contend the disease. The rate of crime is also on the rise in the country with theft being a common problem. What hinders the progress of the country further is corruption at the government level. History Of The Zambia Police

In 1964, the republic of Zambia attained independence from the United Kingdom. The constitution was laid out in 1973 and the republic was under the functioning of the only authorized party prevalent at that time named the United National Independence Party (UNIP). However, this monopoly came to an end in 1990, after which the constitution was renewed.

The elections of 1991 brought to power the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) with its leader Levy Mwanawasa elected as the president in the year 2001. The police force was established in Zambia in the name of Zambia Police or ZP in the year 1964. The Zambia Police comes under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
