Brief History Of Sierra Leone  

Sierra Leone got independence in the year 1961 from British. Sierra Leone was a colony of British since 1808. British were in this small African country in the west coast before 1808 and it used to trade slaves. In the year 1787, a small area of land where the freed slaves got settled was bought.

Brief History Of Sierra Leone         This area was called the province of freedom which was later called Freetown. This arrangement also faced a lot of difficulties and problems. The first constitution of Sierra Leone was written in the year 1863. This helped in establishing the executive and legislative council in replacement of governor’s advisory council.

The executive council included the governor, the attorney general as the advocate of the queen, the colonial secretary and the commanding officer of the troops. The legislative council included the members who were nominated and called officials and also unofficial members whom the governor appointed. The groups like the Ratepayers Association, Aborigines Rights Protection Society, Civil Service, and the Sierra Leone Bar Association which are backed by newspapers like the Sierra Leone Times became a constitutional platform for distressed people.More...

History Of Taxation In Sierra Leone

After the American Revolutionary War, the Americans tried to settle the freed slaves who were with the Great Britain. In the year 1787, 400 people went to the Sierra Leone province; they got some land from the Temne leaders and set up the province of freedom which is located near the present Freetown.

They did not have happy living because a disease killed many people in the first year. They again planned for resettlement in the year 1792 and 1,100 people were freed by Thomas Clarkson. And they were 500 blacks who were freed from Jamaica who joined in the year 1800. The colony was under the control of the Sierra Leone Company. It was in the year 1991, when the civil war in Sierra Leone was started by the Revolutionary United Front led by Foday Sankoh. Two million were relocated and tens of thousands died in this 11 year war. The refugees moved to the neighboring countries. The war was declared to have finished on 18 January 2002 officially.

In the year 1985, Joseph Momoh who was a military leader was made the Sierra Leone president. One of the major groups in opposition included students Foday Sanhok, Rashid Mansaray, Abu Ahmed Kanu. Many students in this country were expelled and they moved to Ghana and then to Libya and there they went to Moammar Qaddafis secret service military training. Many unemployed men, who were young and students, were recruited and as the members grew they had internal conflicts and many moved away from the group some went to the Ghana universities and others to the Sierra Leone.
