Medical History Of Botswana

In the year 1946, the Medical Association of South Africa came in affiliation with British Medical Association. It resulted in a document which stated that the protectorate of Basutoland, Bechualand and Swaziland will be in the area of the medical association of South Africa. All the medical activities which were professional were done with the supervision of the medical association of South Africa.

The profitable avenues were affiliated to British Medical Association or the branches were formed as a part of the British Medical Association as it happened in Uganda, Kenya, Lesotho and Tangayika. Dr. Kennedy, the first government specialist surgeon, took the responsibility to draft a constitution for the association which was proposed. They held a clinical meeting of the medical officers on July 19, 1968 in which the draft copy of the constitution was put in front of the members. People at the meeting discussed, debated, amended and then accepted by the people in the meeting. It was on 20 September 1968 when the general meeting was held in the Princess Marina Hospital and the Medical Association of Botswana was inaugurated formally.

The objective of this association is to provide education to the doctors by conducting the clinical meetings and guest lectures presenting the scientific clinical and research papers. This association solely continued educating the doctors. The other objective is to present the specific interests of the medicos in government negotiations and with the official bodies in the country.

The dentists who initially arrived in the country worked in the mission’s dental service situated in Gaborone and also at the Baptist Mission located in Francistown.
