Botswana Brief History

Botswana is the term which represents the Botswana citizens, and it is referred to the ethnic group called Tswana, which dominates the country. This ethnic group is from South Africa, which entered the country at the time of Zulu wars in the starting of the 1800s. Before the Europeans entered the country the people of Botswana made their living as farmers and herders under the rule of the tribal.

In the 19th century, there were conflicts between Boer settlers who were the natives of Transvaal and Botswana. After the Botswana appealed for assistance, the British made Botswana as Bechuanaland protectorate in the year 1885. The north area was under the control of the administration and it is the present Botswana and the south part came under the cape colony and now comes under the South African northwest province. The British central authority was expanded and the tribal government came into existence in the year 1920 which resulted in the establishment of 2 advisory councils which represented Europeans and Africans.

In 1964 June, the British accepted the proposal made by the democratic self government of Botswana. The government seat was moved to Gaborone from Mafikeng of South Africa in the year 1965. The first general elections were the result of 1965 constitution and it got independence in 1966 September.
