History Of South Africa Timeline  

Most of the South Africans are the descendants of the people who were brought in as slaves in the period of 1653 to 1822. The Dutch East India Company was the first company to be established in South Africa in the year 1652. The Dutch were one of the first to colonize South Africa. In the same year they wanted to get into agriculture and requested for slaves.

Here is a history of South Africa in terms of timeline:

  • In 1653, the first slave called Abraham Van Batavia arrived to Cape Town.
  • In 1654, the Dutch started looking for slaves through Mauritius all the way up to Madagascar.
  • In 1687, the petition for free slave trade was signed.
  • In 1658, farms were granted to the ex company soldiers. They undertake a secret journey and bring in 228 slaves.
  • In 1720, France occupied Mauritius.
  • From 1816 to 1826, Shaka Zulu founded and expanded the Zulu Empire in South Africa.
  • From 1835 to 1840, the Boers left South Africa and founded the Transvaal Republic.
  • In 1867, in South Africa diamonds were discovered in Kimberly.
  • In 1877, for diamond trade the British and the Boers defeated the Zulus.
  • In 1881, the Boers rebel against the British and are at war with them.
  • In 1881, the gold rush in South Africa begins.
  • In 1910, the Union of South Africa was formed by the British colonies of the Cape Town region.
  • In 1913, Land Act was introduced preventing the blacks from purchasing land.
  • In 1961, South Africa was declared as a republic.
  • In 1964, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for lifetime.
  • In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released after worldwide demonstration and sanctions being levied on South Africa.

Colonial-History-Of-South-Africa      South Africa was first invaded by the Dutch in 1652. That is when the colonial invasion of South Africa started. They first arrived at the Table Bay and there were to establish the Dutch East India Company. However, the original plan of the Dutch was not to have a full fledged colony. After the French Revolution, France occupied the Netherlands. In order to prevent them from taking over Dutch colonies, the Dutch requested England to get involved in the Cape colony. More..
