Marie Salomee Sklodowska Curie was a famous scientist. She was born on November 7, 1867 in Poland. She discovered polonium, radium, and coined the word radioactivity. In 1903 she was the first women to win the Nobel Prize which she shared with her husband Pierre and another scientist in physics Henry Becquerel. In 1911, she won the Nobel Prize for physics for her work on radiology. It is believed that she died of leukemia which she got from long exposure to radioactive materials.
Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin was born on February 13, 1873, near Kazan, Russia. He was the most famous Russian opera singer. His powerful and supple voice, together with his tremendous physique and his superb ability as a naturalistic actor made him one of the greatest performer in the history of opera. He is also credited with establishing the tradition of naturalistic acting in opera. Chaliapin died of leukemia in 1938 at the age of 65 in Paris.
Frantz Omar Fanon, a West Indian psychoanalyst and social philosopher and theorist of anti-imperialist revolution, was born in the French colony of Martinique on July 20, 1925. He is best known for his work in fighting against colonization. He served the French army in world war II, earned a medical degree and became the head of the psychiatric department of an Algerian Hospital Where he edited the Newspaper “National Liberation front”. He too died of Leukemia at the young age of 36 on December 6, 1961 in Washington D.C.
