Famous Gay People

Although gay people are just getting recognition and acceptance in the world today, but history has witnessed many famous gay people who were openly gay and proud of it. Here is a list of some famous gay people who are remembered and revered even today irrespective of their homosexuality.

Famous Gay People:

Leonardo Da Vinci: The late renaissance architect, painter, poet, designer and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452. He is famous for his notable paintings including The Last Supper, Mona Lisa and the Vitruvius Man. His paintings have a blend of the humanity and divinity and this was reflected in his work. An allegation of his homosexuality was made when he was 24 years old. Leonardo was arrested on charges of sodomy with a seventeen year old male model, which was a serious crime in the 15th century Florence. However, no witnesses appeared to support the allegations.

There were many rumors about da Vinci’s sexual orientation as most of his paintings depicted young boys, the most popular being the effeminate John in The Last Supper and the fact that he had no wife and kids but several young male protégés.

Freddie Mercury: The lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury was born on September 5, 1946 in Zanzibar Island. He was inclined to music and learnt to play the piano at St. Peter’s boarding school in India. He was a singer, songwriter, performer and vocalist of the ever-popular British group Queen. On March 12, 1974, Freddie Mercury publicly revealed that he was gay and lived with his last partner Jim Hutton for six years.

Rupert Everett: Born on May 29, 1959, Rupert Everett is the best example of an openly gay actor who fought and overcame the stigma associated with gay men. This British actor was an Italian model and sang duets with Madonna and Robbie Williams and currently plays the piano and writes for Vanity Fair magazine.
