Karl Rove Biography

Presidential advisor Karl Rove was the Chief Political Strategist in the Bush administration. He is also President Bush’s close personal friend. Born Karl Christian Rove on December 25, 1950 in Denver, Colorado, Karl Rove was raised in Nevada by his mother and stepfather.

Rove attended the University of Utah, the University of Texas at Austin, and George Mason University. He taught at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. He also taught in the Journalism Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Between 1973 and 1974, Rove became the Special Assistant to Republican National Committee Chairman George H.W. Bush. He served as an Executive Director of the Fund for Limited Government from 1977 to 1978. He was also the Deputy Chief of Staff to Texas Governor William Clements in 1981.

Rove was married to Houston socialite Valerie Mather Wainright in 1976. They were divorced in 1980. He then married designer Darby Tara Hickson in 1986.

Karl Rove is also the president of Rove and Company. It is an Austin-based public affairs firm that worked not only for political candidates, but also for nonpartisan causes and nonprofit groups. He is credited of conducting several successful election campaigns including Phil Gramm’s 1982 and 1984 U.S. Senate elections, Bill Clements’ race for the Texas governor in1986 and John Ashcroft’s bid for the U.S. Senate elections in 1994.

Rove was the key strategist for George W. Bush’s presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004.

Controversy surrounded Rove in 2006 when he was under suspicion in a scandal that involved leaking the identity of Valerie Plame, a CIA officer.  In April 2006, Rove decided to step down from his domestic policy role in the administration.
