Jason Mraz Biography

Singer and songwriter Jason Mraz’s musical appetite is quite strong. His early influences include elements of jazz, hip-hop, and coffeehouse folk, which clearly show up in some of his songs. Jason Mraz was born on June 23, 1977 in Mechanicsville, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond. He completed in high school from Lee Davis.

Mraz’s first introduction to music was in a musical theater in New York. After his brief stint in the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, he began focusing on songwriting. In 1999, Mraz made his way west and settled in San Diego, CA. San Diego is known for its coffeehouse scene and support for its singers and songwriters. Mraz landed in local shops and began playing a weekly slot at Java Joe’s. For two years, Mraz’s following grew outside San Diego. In the early 2002, Mraz signed a deal with Elektra Records and returned to Virginia to write and record his debut album. His ultimate dream came true when he met his high school heroes, the Agents of Good Roots, who became his backing band. In November 2002, His first album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, was released. The first single “Remedy” was a hit and to support it, Mraz performed it on the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee. This became Jason’s summer 2004 live release.

Jason Mraz was awarded the 2002 San Diego Music Award for Best Acoustic. In 2003, he won the San Diego Artist of the Year award. In 2005 his album, Mr. A-Z (read as MrAZ) was nominated for the Best Engineered Album at the Grammy Awards. Mraz released his third studio album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, in 2008.
