Harold Warren Moon, former Canadian and American football quarterback, was born on November 18, 1956 in Los Angeles, California. From 1974 to 1975 Warren Moon decided to attend West Los Angeles College, where he achieved recognition as a record-setting quarterback. Moon tried to sign up with the National Football League (NFL), but went undrafted. Experts believed the main reason was Moon’s refusal to switch positions. Some believed it was because of racist reasons. But Moon did not lose hope and chose the Canadian Football League (CFL). Moon signed up with the Edmonton Eskimos and led them to consecutive Grey Cup victories between 1978 and1982.
His final CFL season won him the Most Valuable Player award as he threw a league record of 5,648 yards. In his CFL career Moon had an impressive 57.4 completion percentage in his 2,382 attempts. In his NFL career, Moon had some difficulty in adjustments as the field was narrower than CFL’s. However, he still had a successful season with the Oilers from 1984 to 1986. The Oilers posted a 9-6 record and won the 1987 season.
Warren Moon was given a $10 million contract for five years before the start of the 1989 season. This made him the highest paid player in the National Football League. In 1992, Moon only plaid eleven games because of injuries, but still led Oilers to a 10-6 record which included the defeat of Buffalo Bills in the final game of the season.
Warren Moon was named to nine Pro Bowl games (1988-1995) during his entire NFL career. In 2006, Moon was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He became the first African-American quarterback to be so. Currently, Moon works for the Seattle Seahawks as a broadcaster.
