Alberto Gonzales Biography

Alberto Gonzalez was born in San Antonio, Texas on August 4, 1955. He was born to Pablo and Maria Gonzales. His parents settled in Humble, near Houston after his birth and raised seven more children. His father was employed in a rice mill. During his high school years, Alberto excelled in studies and attended MacArthur High School as an honors student.

In 1973, Alberto enlisted with the United States Air Force for a four year term. During his term, he served two years as a cadet in the U.S. Air Force Academy and two years at Fort Yukon, Alaska.  Interest in politics and law got him transferred to Rice University in Houston and in 1982, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He also won admission to Harvard Law School and received a degree in law.

After completing his bachelor’s degree, Gonzalez married Diane Clemens. In 1985, he divorced Diane and married Rebbeca Turner.

He served as an attorney in a private law firm, Vinson and Elkins, in Houston between 1982 and 1994. He was also made a partner of the firm. In 1997, Alberto Gonzalez was appointed to the position of Secretary of State of Texas and in 1999 to the Texas Supreme Court by George W. Bush.

Gonzalez’s career was always surrounded by controversy under the Bush administration. He advocated the controversial US Patriot Act and was also accused of supporting the decision to deport foreign combatants to nations that allow torture.

 He was appointed as the Attorney General of United States in February 2005 by a solid majority. Alberto Gonzalez announced his intention to step down as Attorney General on August 27, 2007.
