Who Was Athena ?
Athena is known to be the Goddess of war, wisdom, arts, justice, skill and industry. She is the favorite daughter of Zeus, the king of gods. Her birth did not happen as it happened in case of the other goddesses. Zeus and Metis got married and soon Metis was pregnant. But Zeus was told by some gods that if she delivers a boy child, he would grow up and kill the king of gods, Zeus. |
Frightened by this, Zeus turned Metis into a fly and swallowed her and this caused him a severe headache. He couldn’t bear the headache and asked Hephaestus to axe his head and when Hephaestus did so Athena came out of the head fully grown with a helmet and armor.
Athena, whose Roman name is Minerva, is the goddess of crafts, domestic arts and war. She was also the patron goddess of Athens. The symbol of Athena was owl. She was a goddess who was in a bird form. She was also known as goddess of wisdom lately.
Athena supported the heroes like Jason, Perseus, Cadmus, Heracles and Odysseus in their missions.
Poseidon and Athena tried to become the patron deity of Athens. To prove that she was worthy to become the patron deity, she made the olive tree to leap on the Athens' citadel, the Acropolis. Poseidon wanted to outshine her by hitting the ground with a trident and water sprang out, but the water turned out to be salty because he was the god of sea. So the gift of Athena to Athenians was thought to be valuable, so she was made the patron deity. Athena also helped Perseus to kill Medusa in a quest because she wanted the head of the gorgon for decorating her shield.
