Why Was Aphrodite The Greek Goddess Of Love ?

As per the Greek mythology, the goddess of love, sexual rapture and beauty is Aphrodite. As told by Hesoid, Aphrodite was born when Cronus castrated the father of gods named Uranus. Cronus cut off his genitals and threw them into the sea which became the form of foam, and washed away onto the shore of Cyprus or Cythera in a shell with Aphrodite. This is the reason why she is often called Kypris and Cyntherea. Homer believes that she is the daughter of Dione and Zeus.

After Aphrodite was born, Zeus thought that she would be a cause for the fight between the gods and made her marry the god of forge, Hephaestus. He made her the most beautiful jewels for Aphrodite. He also made her a girdle which was gold in a shape and had magic in it. He was unwise when he decided to give the girdle to her because when she wore it, no one was able to resist her. She loved glamor and hated to be a wife of a hard working god like Hephaestus.

A lot of gods and also mortals loved Aphrodite. The most popular of her lovers was a mortal named Adonis. She had sons named Eros, Hymenaios, Aeneas and Eros.

The festival of Aphrodite is called aphrodisiac which the Greeks celebrated in many places in Greece like the Corinth and Athens. The priestesses of Aphrodite are not prostitutes, and they were the representatives of the goddesses and sexual intercourse with them was a form of worship. Aphrodite is an ancient goddess who is compared to the Isthar of Mesopotamia and Ashtart of Syro-Palestine.
