Why Was Poseidon The God Of The Sea ?
Poseidon is the Greek mythological god of the sea. He was the son of Cronus, the god of time, and Rhea, the mother god. They were the Titans of the world. Cronus swallowed all his children as soon as they were born. Poseidon along with all other siblings was also swallowed by Cronus. However, Zeus was the only god to escape Cronus' wrath because of his mother's cleverness. |
Zeus was very cunning. So he gave his father a potion to drink and that would make him vomit all his siblings. When Cronus vomited all his children, Zeus got together with them and plotted against his parents. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades drove the Titans along with the help of their sisters out of the universe. When they returned victorious, they divided the powers among themselves. Zeus became the god of heavens and the king of the gods. Hades became the god of the Underworld, and Poseidon became the god of the sea.
It was believed that Poseidon lived in the deep ocean in a beautiful palace made of gems and stones. He lived with his wife there. His wife was a sea nymph called Amphitrite. However, he had several affairs with women and had several children from them.
Poseidon is equated to the Roman god of Neptune in mythological stories. He was also the most supreme gods who lived on Mount Olympus, the abode of the gods. Poseidon, Zeus and Hades were responsible for the creation of the world. Poseidon created rivers and fresh water and also gave the world several animals of use. However, he had a short temper and he often went to war when he was angry.
