Poseidon is the sea god and he has several names. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea. Poseidon is one of the six siblings, and Zeus is one of his brothers. Poseidon, Zeus and Hades divided the powers of the world among themselves. They were responsible for driving out the Titans from the world, including their parents. |
Poseidon became the ruler of the sea when the three brothers divided the power among themselves. Poseidon is symbolized with his trident, dolphins and rhea three pinged fish spears. Sailors worshipped Poseidon before they voyaged into the sea. It was a ritual in ancient Greece to drown horses in a sacrifice for him. Poseidon was known to be a very moody god and if he got angry, he struck his trident to the ground which caused earthquakes. When Poseidon was happy, he would create rivers and new lands in the water, and also the sea would be calm.
Poseidon had an extraordinary weakness for women just like his brother Zeus. He had several love affairs, including one with Aphrodite; and also he had several children from different women. His wife was Amphitrite, and he had a son called Triton, who was half human and half fish. He also had an affair with Medusa, who produced Pegasus from the union. Poseidon had a love affair with his sister Demeter. In order to avoid Poseidon, Demeter turned herself into a mare. However, Poseidon turned himself into a stallion, and then enticed her. Poseidon is a very brave and young man in several depictions. He never feared wars and won several of them.
