Facts About Hades

Hades is a Greek mythological god and is the son of Cronus and Rhea. Hades is a bearded man in appearance, just like Zeus. He holds a scepter and a horn of plentiness. These are considered as his symbols. Hades is the god of riches and the wealth of the earth. He deals with precious metals and is known to be extremely determined and persistent. He is, however, best known as the god of the Underworld.

Hades was very passionate and Persephone was his weakness. She was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus had promised Hades as his bride. However, Zeus did not mention the same to Demeter or his daughter Persephone. This led to a lot of confusions later. Hades was born on the island of Cretes and had to stay along with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon. Finally after a lot of confusion Hades did marry Persephone but she could spend only a few days of the year with him and rest of the time she had to live with her mother in the underworld.

Hades was worshipped in Nekromanteion where he also has a temple along the river Styx which is the river of the dead. It is there even today and can be visited. Hades captures out of the earth and kidnaps Persephone and takes her along so that she could be her queen in the underworld. However, Persephone spends one third of the year with Hades, one third with Zeus and one third with her mother. Persephone is the goddess of seasons and she has to spend her time at different places for the seasons to arrive.
