Eros is the Greek god of lust and sexual desire, and is also often called as Cupid by the Romans. He is known as the oldest god according to some mythical legends, and he is believed to be the offspring of Aphrodite and Ares. Eros is often depicted as a small boy with a bow and arrow and wings and he is also depicted as a young handsome man with a bow and arrow and wings. |
Eros usually carries two kinds of arrows. One is the golden arrow with the dove feathers which causes love in a person’s heart and arouses sexual feelings. The other is the lead arrow with the feathers of the owl which is known to cause indifferences. Eros was believed to be very cruel to his victims.
Eros was always close to his mother and aided her in plotting many schemes against people. Aphrodite who was the mother of Eros was very jealous of psyche because of his beauty. She sent Eros to cause her to fall in love with someone ugly but he fell in love with her himself. Eros married Psyche, and had several children, including the Nyx or the night.
Some versions of Greek mythological stories say that Eros was one of the ancient gods and the creator of gods and mortals. However, it has now been concluded that there are two versions of Eros, one is the primeval version as a creator and the other is the young Eros with the bow and arrow causing lust and sexual desire.
