What Powers Did Calypso Have Over The Greek God ?

Calypso according to the Greek mythology is the nymph who seduced odyssey and kept him away from his wife for several years. Odyssey’s wife was Penelope. Finally Athena had to interfere and finally Calypso had to let Odysseus go and also helped him to build his boat. Calypso has both negative and positive qualities. She is considered as a concealed and seductress and she is also a rescuer. She was always compared to Penelope. So, she was considered to be the distraction and diversification.

Calypso lived on the island of Ogygia. She was kept as a prisoner there because she aided in the battles between the titans and Olympians. The island of Ogygia is still undiscovered. Odysseus was returning from the battle of Troy after a tiresome journey of fighting with monsters and losing his ship in the open sea. He landed on the island of Ogygia and Calypso fell in love with him. Odysseus, who as pining for his wife Penelope, did not fall for Calypso and kept avoiding her.

Calypso did not give up and kept pursuing Odysseus and also imprisoned him. She kept seducing him and eventually he became her lover. They lived together for 7 long years in the caverns. Calypso had two children with Odysseus. Zeus sent one of his messengers to release Odysseus, and Calypso could not refuse Zeus. So, she helped Odysseus build a boat and sent him back to his wife in Ithaca.

Legend has it that if Athena never interfered then Odysseus would have lived with Calypso throughout and never returned home.
