Poseidon was a war mongering god, and he is also very moody and unpredictable. He married amphitricha the goddess of the sea. His parents were Cronos, the god of time, and Rhea, the goddess of earth. His brothers are Zeus and Hades. Poseidon had several children some from his wife and many from his illicit relationships. He was the father of Triton, who was born to his wife. He also had children from Medusa, and fathered Pegasus. And, he also fathered Aron with his sister Demeter.
One of the stories about Poseidon was that Poseidon was in competition with Athena to create something for the people of Acropolis to win their love. Poseidon created horses and Athena gave olives. So the capital of Greece became Athens because they loved olives more. Poseidon is often compared with the Roman god Neptune. He is also credited for the creation of horses which were very useful.
