Archimedes Early Life

He studied in Egypt, and was a follower of a famous mathematician Euclid. Archimedes developed a lot of interest in mathematics while he was studying under Euclid. He spent a lot of time devising how to calculate volume and area. He also defined the word pi, and formed the integral calculus.There were several inventions such as the water pump and the discoveries made in hydrostatics that credited to him. All these made him very famous. Archimedes was born in a politically disturbed town called Syracuse. It is somewhere near Sicily in Italy. However, at that time Syracuse was a Greek city. His father Phidias was a wealthy man and was a keen astronomer. So calculations were not new for Archimedes.
Because Syracuse was under invasion, Archimedes was sent to Alexandria, which was in Egypt, to study mathematics. At an early age, Archimedes had to participate in warfare also. Even during the war times, Archimedes contributed to the war by inventing some tool or the other. When he was in Alexandria, he invented the Archimedes screw. The general needed a ship which was huge, and gave Archimedes the responsibility to build it; and that is when Archimedes came up with this contraption. This screw is used even today for several industrial purposes. And, today, it is listed as one of the world’s greatest inventions.
