First President Under The Articles Of Confederation

Numerous Presidents ruled America after independence under the Articles of Confederation. The most famous President however seems to be George Washington but what might come as a surprise to many is that he was not the first President to rule America. He was the first President to rule America under a set defined Constitution that is followed until date.

So, who was the 1st President under the Articles of Confederation? It was the famous John Hanson. He took over as the 1st President of the United States soon after the Revolutionary War. His first task was to order the withdrawal of all foreign soldiers from American soil. As the role of presidency was not clearly defined, he had a huge task of setting a clear standard for future presidents to follow.

He was born in a politically inclined family. Numerous family members of his clan were involved in the American politics one way or the other. He was elected to the Provincial Legislature of Maryland in 1775. Two years later, he went on to become a member of the Congress. When the United States was formed in 1781, the Articles of Confederation was adopted and signed by various states. John Hanson turned out to be the undisputable candidate for the Presidency post and was therefore unanimously chosen.

The Great Seal of the US for all official documents was established under his Presidency. He pledged the 4th Thursday of every November to be celebrated as Thanksgiving Day. He completed his one term in office making him the first President to complete his tenure.
