Zachary Taylor Fun Facts  

Zachary Taylor was the 12th president of the United States. He was the first president elected without ever having served in an elected office before. In addition, he was a career military man who served the US army for 40 years. He was a national hero for his role in the Mexican War.

Here are some fun facts about Zachary Taylor:

  • James Madison was Zachary Taylor's second cousin. He was instrumental in getting Taylor into the US army.
  • When Taylor was elected president of the United States, he was due to be inaugurated in March 1849. However, the day of the inauguration was a Sunday and as a result Taylor refused to take the Oath of Office.
  • On July 4, 1850, Taylor ate cherries and drank milk at a ceremony at the Washington Memorial. However, he fell ill because of the heat, and died after 5 days. He was the second president to die in office.
  • Taylor did not cast his first ballot until he was 62 years old. While he was young, he was in the army moving all over the place and as a result he could establish a legal place of residence until he retired from the army.
  • Taylor had the habit of refusing any letter that came with postage due. As a result he did not know that he was elected the president for a few days.
  • Taylor kept his horse that he rode on during the different battles he fought in the lawn of the White House. The horse was name Whitney.
  • Taylor was known to chew tobacco and he was also known never to miss a spittoon when he spat.
  • Whenever Taylor went to a battle on his horse, he always rode his horse on a side saddle.
