What Was Zachary Taylors Life As A Child ?
Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the Untied States, was born on November 24, 1784. He was a career military officer, having served in the US army for 40 years. He was active as a soldier in the War of 1812, Black Hawk War and the Second Seminole War. He became famous for leading the US army to victory during the Mexican American War. |
Taylor was from the South, and a slave holder, but he was completely against the spread of slavery to other parts of America. He was never interested in politics, but was still nominated as the presidential candidate for the 1848 presidential election by the Whigs. He ended up winning the election and became the first US president to never hold a previous elected office. He was instrumental in laying the foundation for the Compromise of 1850.
Taylor was born in a farm in Orange County, Virginia. His family was well known wealthy plantation owners, and he was the youngest of the three sons among nine siblings. His father, Richard Taylor, served during the American Revolution with George Washington.
His early childhood was spent living on the frontier in Louisville, Kentucky in a small cabin in the woods. Later, when his family became prosperous, they moved to brick house. By 1800, his father ended up owning 10,000 acres of land along with many town lots and 26 slaves.
At that time, there were no schools in the frontier. So, Zachary Taylor was tutored to the bare minimum by tutors that his father hired on and of. He was not a very good student, and had bad handwriting, spelling and grammar throughout his life.
