How Long Was William Henry Harrison President ?  


William Henry Harrison was the ninth president of the United States. He has the dubious distinction of being the first president to die in office. He has another first to his merit which was being the oldest president elected until Ronald Reagan got elected as the fortieth president in 1980. In addition, Harrison is also the last president to be born before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

So, how long was William Henry Harrison president is a question that is often asked because he did not stay long enough in office to leave a mark. Harrison was president only for 32 days. He died on the thirty-second day in office. He had the shortest tenure as the president of the United States in the history of the nation.

Following his sudden demise, there a short constitution crisis as to who would take over the presidency. There was no answer in the US Constitution for this until the 25th Amendment was passed.

Harrison was born in a political family of Virginia on February 9, 1773. He was the youngest of the seven children of Benjamin Harrison V and Elizabeth Bassett. He was the last president to be born a British subject.

Harrison's father was a delegate in the Continental Congress and he signed the Declaration of Independence. Also, he was the governor of Virginia from 1781 to 1784. Harrison's brother also joined politics and became the representative of Virginia in the House of Representatives. Besides this, Harrison's father-in-law was also a representative in the House of Representatives.

In 1836, Harrison ran for presidency by was unsuccessful in his attempt. He was re-nominated in 1840 with John Tyler as his running mate. This time, Harrison was supported by incumbent president Martin Van Buren, and he won 234 electoral votes out of a total of 294.

On his inauguration, Harrison gave a speech for one hour and forty minutes. After the inaugural address, Harrison got caught in the rain and ended up getting a cold. His health started declining from there and he finally passed away on April 4, 1841.
