Thomas Jefferson, born on April 13, 1743, was the third president of the United States. He was also one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson became the president in 1801 after he defeated John Adams in the presidential elections.

Here are some unknown facts about Thomas Jefferson:

  • Thomas Jefferson was brought up an Anglican and maintained some form of connection with the Anglican Church. However, he was known to contribute equal amounts to all denominations in his hometown.
  • He was an accomplished architect, and was instrumental in bringing the Neo-Palladin style of architecture to the United States.
  • Jefferson founded, designed and built the University of Virginia.
  • He also designed his home Monticello located in Charlottesville, Virginia after he inherited land from his father.
  • Jefferson was also behind the design of his Poplar Forest estate located in Bedford County, Virginia.
  • He made contributions to the designing of Virginia State Capitol, which is modeled after an ancient Roman Temple located in Nimes, Southern France.
  • Jefferson invented a rotating book stand and type of copying device that made copies of any letters as he was writing them.
  • His estate was equipped with automatic doors and swivel chair.
  • He was very fond of collecting wines and was known to be a gourmet.
  • He published a manual called A Manual of Parliamentary Practice in 1801. This manual is even used today.
  • He sold his collection of more than 6,000 books to the Congress for a sum of $23,950. This collection formed the basis of the Library of Congress.
